New electric freight logistics service cuts CO2 emissions by 95%

Automotive AB, the Nordic logistics hub for Lesjӧfors’ Automotive Aftermarket, has significantly cut its scope 3 emissions with help from packaging supplier, Stora Enso.

Stora Enso, one of the world’s leading providers of renewable packaging solutions, has partnered with an electric freight company, enabling a switch from diesel to electric transportation of its packaging to Lesjӧfors, delivering a sustainable solution, at Lesjӧfors’ request, to cut scope 3 emissions.

Partnership secures 95% CO2 reduction

In a first for the corrugated business arm of Stora Enso, this collaboration between a trio of sustainably focused organisations has driven a solution that lowers CO2 emissions by up to 95%.

Anna Haesert, Head of Sustainability at the Lesjӧfors Group says: “Collaboration is key to sustainable innovations and this latest development with Stora Enso is a perfect example of how working together, sharing our sustainable goals with our suppliers, and customers, has led to an innovation where everyone benefits – especially our environment.”

Sustainable ambitions

“Knowing Lesjӧfors’ ambition to be the number one supplier of sustainable spring and pressing solutions in the world, we wanted to help them achieve their goals and suggested that we would deliver our products with an electric truck, to reduce their scope 3 emissions,” says Anna Hörberg, Head of Supply Chain, Corrugated Sweden at Stora Enso.

In line with many companies working hard to become more sustainable, more and more are also keeping track of their ‘scope 3 emissions’. Scope 3 emissions are the result of activities not owned or controlled by the company, but that indirectly affect their value chain – like emissions caused by a third-party delivering products to the company.

Haesert continues: “Lesjӧfors has committed to a climate reduction roadmap by setting emission reduction targets grounded in climate science through the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) and partnerships are key to us reducing our Scope 3 emissions. We’re very grateful to Stora Enso for providing this new EV delivery solution.”

Enhanced efficiencies

In addition to the scope 3 emission reductions, the delivery truck is also now loaded more efficiently, making room for more products. Deliveries now come every 14 days, instead of once a week, reducing the number of trucks by 26 per year.

Ongoing sustainable journey

Håkan Möller, CFO at Lesjöfors Automotive says: “The Lesjӧfors Group takes sustainability very seriously. We supply millions of springs for the global automotive aftermarket, which requires many tons of corrugated material. We are now also exploring new eco packaging with Stora Enso, working hard to be more sustainable wherever we can.”

Lesjöfors’ Logistic Manager Bo Magnusson agrees: “When a more sustainable opportunity like this EV route presents itself, we jump on it. It’s working so well. Stora Enso listened and found our solution. They are so customer focused, and by lowering the carbon footprint for transporting the products we order, it has made us value them as a supplier even more.”
